Flying Solo

Wow. I can’t remember the last time I just did nothing for an extended period of time. Is this what summer break feels like? I don’t remember, I’ve always had jobs, projects, things to do.

Last night was truly blissful. I plowed through 4 loads of laundry (which are neatly folded and organized and still sitting on my bed — they haven’t graduated to the closet yet) and dove deeper into Girls after a round of kickboxing, some major minor cleaning and straightening and vanquishing the dishes.

This morning I woke up, made myself breakfast and in the early hours of the day I began re-reading one of my favorite books of all time. I don’t remember it being so densely poignant when I read it the first time. But I think that’s what makes re-reading stories such a wonderful experience — you grow with the stories.

The other bits of the mosaic of the day have included recieving a postcard from my friend vacationing in ICELAND and it totally made my day. I can’t wait to visit her in Seattle in July. So much so I’m already amassing my wardrobe.  I tried to sunbathe but that was foiled by drizzle and I think I’m going to bake something.

A coworker of mine is this wonderful, bright, super organized mom of two. She’s the kind of woman who never forgets a birthday card, is always on time for things if not early, has tablescapes and a hierarchy of decorations, wrapping paper and ribbons. How she does it all, I have no idea, maybe that’s what happens after you graduate from phase 2 of adulthood: going-to-bed-early-getting-up-early-getting-tipsy-on-2-beers-and-maintaining-a-budget. Anyway, I was telling her how much she was making Suzie Homemaker look like a bush-league slob and she just crinkled her nose adorably and said “I love doing this!”

Something about her adoration for being SuperMom triggered something in me. The something that makes me want to renovate a bathroom, plan a birthday party and bake muffins. I have to say, I rather like having plenty of downtime. I feel especially creative.
